Technician in Diagnosis Imaging and Nuclear Medicine

About

This program trains the students to obtain graphic, morphological or functional records of the human body from the medical prescription for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes using diagnostic imaging equipment and nuclear medicine and assisting the patients during their stay in the unit, applying radiation protection and quality assurance protocols, as well as those established in the care unit.

The duration is 2,000 hours (1,419 in class and 581 in internships), divided in two academic years.

Access

People having some of the following requirements can access directly to the program:

  • Have the high school diploma or equivalent
  • Have a Vocational Education and Training diploma (VET) or a Certificate of Higher Education (HNC)
  • Professional or technical specialist
  • Have any Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent
  • Having passed the university entrance test for over 25 years

People not having any of the aforementioned requirements must pass an entrance test. In order to apply, it is necessary be aged 19 years old or turn 19 during the year in which the test will take place.

Objectives

The student of the Certificate of Higher Education (HNC) in Diagnosis Imaging and Nuclear Medicine will develop the following competences:

  • Integrate the different processes and functions carried out in a diagnosis imaging unit such as the analysis of their contribution and interface in the preparation of equipment and patients and in the performance of radiological techniques, computed tomography, magnetic resonance and nuclear medicine.
  • Responding to diagnostic studies requirements through graphic records of the human body.
  • Know and manipulate radiographic, magnetic resonance, computed tomography and scintigraphic equipment and imaging systems.
  • Interpret technical and commercial information and radiation regulations.
  • Identify the functions, components and characteristics of use and maintenance of the different radiographic equipment.
  • Connect the physical foundations of imaging with the equipment and its components in order to perform the necessary techniques minimizing the risk of radiation and optimizing the equipment effectiveness and performance.
  • Recognize basic anatomophysiological and pathological characteristics to differentiate between normal and pathological images.
  • Identify the physical foundations of ionizing radiation and non-ionizing radiation and the equipment to verify its operation.
  • Apply processing procedures to obtain the image quality needed.
  • Perform contrast techniques to obtain images according to the protocol established in the unit.

Internship

Internships are carried out in the main hospitals and clinics of the area, as well as in radiology offices of health centers, both public and private, or extrahospital radiology offices. All of them are reference centers in the regions of Girona and Barcelona.
