Emergency Healthcare Technician

About

These post-compulsory program trains students to transfer patients, provide basic health and psychological care in the pre-hospital environment, carry out remote care and collaborate in the organization and development of emergency plans, predictable risk devices and health logistics in an emergency, individual or collective.

The duration is 2,000 hours (1,485 in class and 515 in internships) divided in two academic years.

Access

People having some of the following requirements can access directly to the program:

  • Have the high school diploma or equivalent
  • Having passed the specific course to access the Vocational Training (VET)
  • Have a technician or assistant technician diploma
  • Have other equivalent studies for academic purposes
  • Having passed the university entrance test for over 25 years
  • Having passed the compulsory modules of an initial professional qualification program (PQPI)
  • Have a diploma to access a Higher Education Certificate program.

People not having any of the aforementioned requirements must pass an entrance test. In order to attend the exam you must be aged 17 years old the year of the test.

Objectives

The student of the Vocational Training in Healthcare Emergencies will develop the following competences:

  • Mobilization and immobilization techniques as well as driving to evacuate the patient or victim to the health centre through a safe and professional transfer and a prevention and safety protocol.
  • Basic and advanced life support techniques for patients in health emergency situations.
  • Support to medical and nursing staff in the provision of their service, and following the instructions of the responsible health superior.
  • Control and management of hygienic and operational conditions of the sanitary vehicle.
  • Participation in the team responsible for developing, executing and evaluating emergency plans, risk maps and risk devices.
  • Within the field of its competence, problem solving and decision-making according to the procedure established for special emergency situations.
  • Management of his professional career, analysing work and learning opportunities.
  • Creation and management of a small business, carrying out feasibility studies, planning and marketing.
  • Relate possible pathologies by analysing intervention procedures to evacuate victims safely.
  • Analyse the driving techniques in adverse conditions and with patients with different pathologies, identifying the organic repercussions that an inappropriate transfer can have on health, to evacuate the patient or victim.

Internships

Currently, internships are carried out at the SEM (Medical Emergency System of the Generalitat of Catalonia), private ambulance centers, and other reference centers at the national level.
